PREPARATION & INSTALLATION

By floor type —
what we do & why.

Every floor has its own preparation and installation method. Here is exactly how we handle each one.

Karndean needs a smooth, hardwearing surface to be glued to so that it can last the test of time. Most floors will not be perfectly level but we aim to get it as smooth as possible over the subfloor ready for installation.

TIMBER SUB FLOORS

The subfloor needs to be strong and secure before we take the next step, so floorboards are screwed down and gaps filled in with any squeaky noise fixed where possible. Next we cover the flooring over with a Hanson SP101 flooring ply (minimum 6mm) depending on the subfloor — we decide on the best thickness ply to use. Once the ply is cut and fixed to the subfloor we feather the joins and smooth off any imperfections in the ply.

CONCRETE SUB FLOORS

First we look at what type of concrete you have — liquid or traditional sand/cement — and whether it is a new floor or existing. Liquid screed mostly needs grinding to remove the top layer and open up the pores so we can get the bond with the new screed/latex finish. Traditional sand/cement generally just requires priming and a screed/latex finish; unlike liquid screed it rarely needs grinding. Next the floor requires a damp test to make sure levels are below the flooring manufacturer guidelines (different manufacturers have their own guidelines). Moisture build-up under a Karndean floor is one of the most common reasons a floor fails, so this is very important — a hydrometer is really the only way to take a proper test. A concrete floor quite often should just need a single coat of screed/latex; sometimes however it will require more than one coat depending on how level the existing floor has been left. Two coats are mostly needed after the removal of old floor coverings that have left the subfloor in poor condition.

INSTALLATION

At Manor Flooring we only install glued-down Karndean — we know it lasts so much longer than click/floating systems. With glue-down floors we like to say you get better miles for your pounds. Click doesn't last, so we just don't do it. Our in-house team takes your chosen design and goes through it one more time to make sure you are happy with the layout and makes a few final tweaks if needed. Once all agreed, our skilled installers cut and glue the Karndean into place and leave you with a clean, beautiful looking new floor.

Following manufacturer guidelines is a big part of the flooring preparation, but along with this we have an in-house team of installers — head of the team has over 25 years' experience alone and over 100 years of combined team installation experience to make sure we get the best preparation possible.

SUBFLOOR MASTERY

The invisible craft beneath your feet.

Even the most exquisite oak plank or Karndean tile will fail if the subfloor isn't prepared properly. That's why we handle all grinding, moisture-proofing, and latex screeding in-house before laying a single plank.

Our technical precision delivers a flat, durable surface built to last for generations.
