One can have quite a bit of fun decorating a home. You’ll invest a lot of time browsing through various furniture stores and malls, looking for the right pieces to fit a room and lovely knickknacks that define your style. As you concentrate on wallpaper, vases, bookshelves, and other items, don’t forget that a rug also makes a room. When you really think about it, the most used part of any room is the floor, because it supports all the incoming and outgoing traffic. The rug you choose must not only look nice, but withstand all the feet.
It’s entirely possible, too, to buy a rug that doesn’t work at all with your room. The last thing you want to do is bring something home and feel bad because you don’t like the way it looks. Not only that, but you’re stuck looking at the rug every day.
So how do you avoid buying the wrong rug? Here are a few tips to remember the next time you are shopping for your home decor.
1) Measure the floor and make sure you have the most accurate numbers. The rug you eventually buy may not cover the entire floor, and you may not want it that way. That’s fine, but you definitely do not want to eyeball your measurements then bring home a rug that doesn’t fit. Once you determine the room size, you’ll have a better idea of the size of rug that will work.
2) Take pictures of the room from different angles. Note the color of the walls, furniture, and anything else that sticks out. Rugs come in a variety of styles and patterns, and not all will work with what you have. When you visit a rug and carpet specialty shop, you may find a design expert who can help you with a good match.
3) If possible, look for stores that offer you to bring the rug into your home for a test run so you can get the full picture. There are shops that will do this – you may need to ask, or you can ask around. With the rug in your room, you will better appreciate the look and can make a firm decision on whether or not it belongs there.
It is possible to buy the wrong rug for your home and not be satisfied with the result. Take the time to explore all options and pay attention to how your rooms are set up as you shop.
